Toy Model Trains

Lots of kids love Thomas the Train, a familiar storybook and television character. Many of us keep that fondness for trains when we grow up. Little kids enjoy watching talking trains on their living room television at home, even if they don’t really know just why they love them. As we get older, we develop a better understanding of why we enjoyed trains so much as children. After all, it’s a lot of fun to have or to imagine having control over a powerful machine!

Why do grown adults want to play with model trains when they’re commonly considered toys? Maybe it’s because we love the idea of controlling a powerful train of our own – even though the ones we have can be as small as 1/87th of the size of an actual trains. Perhaps we like to puzzle out how the trains actually work, and control the path that the train takes. And, for a lot of us, model trains bring back fond memories of seeing our train make its way around the Christmas tree every year. Just remember that these trains can be more than toys. There’s a lot more to them!

Most true toy model trains are generally made from plastic, and can be found in toy stores and other areas marketing to small children. They’re inexpensive, and an excellent way to introduce kids to the model train hobby, but quality is low. Higher quality trains are more durable, offer more power, and have better contact with the track, making them more efficient. Their stronger engines mean they can pull more cars, allowing you to create longer trains. Higher grade model trains are also usually made from metal. That means they weigh more and take more power to pull, but it also means that they make better contact with the track, roll more effectively, and will last a lot longer. They can also often hold better detail and will be more realistic looking than a plastic train.

There are options other then electric model trains on the market, too. Did you know that you can get train models that actually run on real steam engines? This is a smaller market than electric-powered trains, but there are still quite a few models and styles to choose from. Plus, they offer lifelike steam, and a much more realistic feel.

Not many of us will actually grow up to drive a real train, even if we dreamed of it as children. However, we don’t have to grow up to operate a full size train to fulfill those childhood dreams. All we have to do is check out the model train hobby. There are so many great opportunities to enjoy the trains we love!
